Driver's license requirement for tax year 2016
Beginning with the 2016 tax filing, New York State is requiring taxpayers to provide information contained on their driver’s license (or other state issued identification) with their e-filed tax return. This is being done in an effort to minimize fraudulently filed tax returns. The information needed is as follows:
- License or ID number
- Issuing state
- Issuance date
- Expiration date
- Document number (NYS issued licenses and IDs only)
New York State has provided alternatives in the case of taxpayers who do not have these forms of identification. New York State has promised to provide more guidance on this. Please forward a copy of your driver’s license to us with your 2016 tax information.
